German Shipping Company Hamburg Süd Christens New Ship

German shipping company Hamburg Süd has christened the newest ship in its fleet, Polar Costa Rica.

The christening ceremony was held in Shanghai on November 29, 2017.

Being built at Jiangsu New Yangzijiang shipyard in China, the 3,884 TEU newbuilding is scheduled for delivery in fall 2018.

The Post-Panamax containership flies the flag of Liberia.

Polar Costa Rica is one of the two 3,884 TEU boxships the company has on order at the aforementioned shipyard, according to data provided by VesselsValue.

On November 30, Danish container shipping giant Maersk Line completed the acquisition of Hamburg Süd after obtaining all necessary approvals.

Following the closure, Hamburg Süd informed it will remain a commercially independent brand under the new owner.

“Hamburg Süd remains a commercially independent company with its own Sales and Marketing, Customer Service, and auxiliary departments such as IT, Human Resources, and Finance and Accounting,” the company said.

“The product range of the Brazilian Aliança, with its focus on the cabotage trade, will continue unchanged, and the subsidiaries operating in the tramp sector – Rudolf A. Oetker (RAO), Aliança Bulk (Aliabulk), and Furness Withy Chartering – as well as the Hamburg Süd Travel Agency, will also carry on their business activities as before,” the company added.
