A ship is continuously in contact with water and moisture laden winds which makes it highly susceptible to corrosion. The other body of the ship (mainly hull) is continuously in contact with water, making it extremely vulnerable to corrosion.

While commonly referred to simply as “zincs,” sacrificial anodes are in fact available in several different alloys including aluminum, magnesium and zinc, although the latter is the most common.

There is a wide range of commercial use for sacrificial (galvanic) anodes due to the need to protect everyday use steel from corrosion. From the protection of offshore oil platforms and underground gas pipelines to the hulls from various sea vessels and storage tanks, sacrificial anodes are the principal factor in corrosion prevention.
